The Red Sea off Hurghada is one of the world's most underrated sport fishing destinations. With its unique geography โ a narrow, deep basin surrounded by desert โ it creates powerful currents and thermoclines that concentrate baitfish and, consequently, the big pelagics that hunt them.
Why Hurghada is Special
Hurghada sits at the northern end of the Red Sea, where the marine ecosystem is shaped by seasonal currents from the Gulf of Suez. The drop-offs begin just 5โ8 nautical miles offshore, plunging to depths of 1,000 meters โ prime territory for trophy-class sport fish.
Top Fishing Spots Around Hurghada
1. Giftun Island Drop-Off
The eastern edge of Giftun Island features dramatic underwater cliffs that drop from 20m to 300m+ within a short distance. This thermal boundary is a natural conveyor belt for Wahoo and Dorado (Mahi-Mahi) in summer months, and Barracuda year-round. We troll along the edge at 7โ9 knots with diving lures and rigged ballyhoo for consistent results.
- Target Species: Wahoo, Mahi-Mahi, Barracuda
- Best Season: May โ October
- Distance from Port: ~8 nautical miles
2. The Northern Offshore Banks
Running north from Hurghada toward Gouna and beyond, a series of offshore banks rise from 200m depth to underwater plateaus at 40โ60m. These structure-rich areas hold massive schools of Queenfish, Giant Trevally (GT), and the occasional Yellowfin Tuna during the summer run.
- Target Species: Giant Trevally, Queenfish, Yellowfin Tuna
- Best Season: June โ September
- Technique: Jigging, popping, live bait
3. The Deep Blue โ Southern Channels
Heading south toward Safaga Pass, the main Red Sea channel reaches its deepest points. This is prime territory for our Deep Drop sessions, where we target Emperor, Grouper, and occasionally Swordfish at depths of 300โ500m. The currents here also concentrate surface pelagics in season.
- Target Species: Emperor, Grouper, Amberjack
- Best Season: Year-round
- Distance from Port: ~15 nautical miles
4. Yellowfin Tuna Grounds (Dec โ Apr)
During winter, massive schools of Yellowfin Tuna sweep through the Red Sea chasing sardine and anchovy. The best grounds lie 20โ35 nautical miles offshore, identified by birds working the surface above bait balls. This is the bread-and-butter of our Crazy Yellowfin Tuna Safari package.
- Target Species: Yellowfin Tuna (30โ80kg)
- Best Season: December 30 โ April 1
- Technique: Chunking, popping, trolling skirted lures
Captain's Tip
Always watch for seabirds. A flock of diving terns working a patch of water almost always means Yellowfin pushing bait to the surface below. We've caught our biggest fish this way โ pure adrenaline from the moment you spot the birds.
5. Inshore Reef Systems
For family-friendly days or when offshore conditions are rough, the inshore reefs around Hurghada offer excellent fishing for Grouper, Snapper, and Lionfish. These reef systems are also where we conduct our Shore Tripsand half-day charters for guests who want a more relaxed experience.
