To qualify for official records, the following rules must be strictly followed:
From the moment the fish strikes, the angler must fight, hook, and land the fish entirely on their own. No one else may touch the rod or reel.
Harnesses and rod gimbals are permitted, but they must be adjusted correctly and cannot be attached to any fixed part of the vessel.
For line classes over 10kg (20lb), the double line and leader combined cannot exceed 12.19m (40ft).
